An exstrawbinary afternoon tea for cancer

an amazing £932 was raised

The official Macmillan "World's Biggest Coffee Morning" greets us next month (30th September), where local people come together to catch up over a cuppa and a slice of something delicious, all for a great cause.

While this is a national event that our teams always love to get involved in, that's not to say we can't show our support at other times.

Jackie Hibbert from our Central Support Finance team in Manchester, is a huge advocate of fundraising for Macmillan after recently fighting her own difficult battle with cancer.

After going for a routine mammogram in April, Jackie was told she had breast cancer.

By May, she'd had her breast removed and underwent immediate reconstruction.

Following her surgery Jackie was told to rest up, but being the active and happy ball of energy that she is, she had ants in her pants.

She loves to bake and following her initial recovery this would keep her busy.

The baking gave her an idea...why not raise money in the process?

This led her to arrange a 'Strawberry Afternoon Tea' at her house. The theme was everything strawberry and along with some friends she baked strawberry milkshake cupcakes, cheesecake, meringues, 'busty biscuits', held strawberry themed games and had Strawberry Pimms on hand to wash it all down with.

Around 70 people came along to show their support, resulting in an ex-strawb-inary £932 being raised for Macmillan and Breast Cancer Cares charities.

Jackie told us:

"I was overwhelmed at the amount of people that attended and am planning to hold a Strawberry Afternoon Tea every couple of years.

I wanted to raise the funds to give something back to both charities that had helped me through my diagnosis and aftercare.

I feel all women should go for the free screening. It may be uncomfortable for a few minutes but it can save your life."

You're an inspiration Jackie and we wish you a speedy recovery!
