You help do great things when you plan ahead

You may know that we sell funeral plans, but did you know that when you buy a plan with us, some of the money goes towards funding good things like Co-op Academy Schools?

We believe the future is worth investing in. That's why since 2010, we've invested in our academies to change the lives of over 20,000 young people in some of the most economically challenged communities across the north of England. Our Academies are built on co-operative principles, encouraging teachers and pupils to work together for a better education and a stronger community. We’re proud that we’ve been able to significantly improve the performance of our schools, which were previously judged inadequate.

We don't just support our academies financially, but we develop links with our business and their communities, to give our pupils and students the chance to develop outside the classroom as much as they do inside.

We think together that adds up to a better outcome for everyone. Strengthening communities and giving children and young people the skills and values they need to succeed. It's what we do.

When you buy from the Co-op, you also help fund local member pioneers, and if you’re a member, 1% of what you spend on Co-op products and services will help a local cause in your community, that you get to choose.

Funeral plans with a difference

We’re also very proud that only our Funeral Plans have a 5 star rating from Fairer Finance. This is because they’re fully guaranteed - covering both funeral director services and third party fees as well as our Co-op Commitment, so if the plan needs to be redeemed before you’re fully paid up, we’ll honour it.

By taking out a Co-op funeral plan, then as well as supporting Co-op Academies, you’ll also be safe in the knowledge that your plan is fully guaranteed. This means that the cost of your funeral is completely covered and your loved ones will have nothing more to pay for the services in your plan and will be assured they’re arranging the funeral exactly as you wanted it to be.

Funerals for you and your community

We’re committed to doing a better way of business in all that we do: from fairtrade coffins to being carbon neutral to offering bereavement support and personal funeral services.

The most important thing to us is providing a perfect, personal service in every funeral we carry out. It’s what we do. We ask all of our clients for their honest feedback and we’re proud to have an exceptionally high client satisfaction rate with over 98% of our clients satisfied with the service they receive from us - this reflects the high standards we hold ourselves to. Part of this is being able to offer an amazingly personal service to all of our families. There are many simple touches that can make a funeral truly personal, like a favourite colour being worn, to more complex arrangements like a specialist hearse or coffin. However big or small, we are committed to doing anything and everything we can to fulfil the wishes of our clients.

Coffins: Almost all of our coffins which we manufacture are made from material from well-managed, forests and other controlled sources. We also work together with Traidcraft (the UK’s leading independent fair trade organisation) to provide fairly-traded bamboo and willow coffins.

Carbon neutral: Yes, we are completely carbon neutral and have been since 2011 – making us the first UK-wide funeral business to be able to say this. Find out more about how we achieved this by reading our Co-op Way Report.

Bereavement support: perhaps the most important difference is how we support people who are living with bereavement. We have around 90 social groups for the bereaved across the UK where anyone who has lost someone can go, meet and talk with people going through the same thing.

We understand that the loss of a child is particularly difficult and if you are arranging a funeral for anyone under the age of 18 we will not charge you for our services.

Our Communities: making a difference in our local communities is close to our hearts. As well as the fantastic social groups for the bereaved, we also host Memory Box workshops. Our memory boxes are filled with local memorabilia, designed to spark the long-term memories of people suffering with dementia. We also hold regular coffee mornings where we invite people to come and ask us their questions about funerals. These talks, and many more that we hold, are all part of our mission to tackle the taboo surrounding death, dying and bereavement.

It’s good to know that when you buy a funeral plan, you’re not just protecting your family and giving them peace of mind, you’re helping great things happen in your community too.
